NEW YORK (AFP) New York police shot and killed an 18-year-old youth armed with only a hairbrush, US media reported Tuesday. Khiel Coppin was shot late Monday after a violent confrontation with his mother, who had called police for help, according to The New York Times. While she was on the phone, Coppin screamed that he had a gun and was going to kill her, the paper said. When police arrived, Coppin had jumped out of a ground-floor window with something in his hand and was shot by officers on the street. Shot some 20 times, Coppin was handcuffed on the ground before being taken to a hospital where he died a short time later, television channel New York One reported. When the shooting stopped, police found that instead of a gun, Coppin was only holding a hairbrush. Two witnesses told the Times that one police officer shouted in vain at his colleagues to stop shooting.
